About
BorealBound is an independent project built and maintained by Koz. It is a bilingual atlas of Canada’s lakes and parks, built only from open government data.
Editorial principles
- Open data only. Every fact comes from a source published under an open licence (Open Government Licence, Creative Commons or equivalent). Sources and licences lists them all.
- No AI-written text. Page sentences come from fixed English and French templates and appear only when the data supports them. No text is generated by a language model.
- No paid placement. No lake, park or business pays to appear on the site or to rank higher.
- Numbers you can check. Rankings and summaries are computed from the data shown, and each page says how. The methodology covers sources, matching and what we leave out (such as modelled depths).
- Dated data. Every section shows the date of its data. The atlas is rebuilt each month from the official sources.
Corrections
Found a mistake, a misspelled name, or a boat launch that is gone? Email hello@borealbound.ca with the page. We check against the official source; if the error is in the source, we report it to the agency that publishes it. Corrections go out in the next rebuild, and anything that affects safety is fixed right away.

Licence and reuse
The data belongs to its publishers and stays under its original licence, named on each page and on Sources and licences. Maps and tables made by BorealBound may be reused under CC BY 4.0: credit “BorealBound” with a link to the page, plus the sources it lists. Lake associations can also embed a lake card on their own site.
Maps are not for navigation.
