Significant snowfall expected over West-Central Alberta today and Saturday. Rainfall will change over to snow through the day today as temperatures drop. Accumulating snow will be confined to higher elevations during the day today, but will become widespread by this evening. Snowfall amounts will be highly variable, ranging from about 7 cm to 25 cm. Communities in protected valleys and lower terrain, such as the townsites of Jasper, Grande Prairie, and Valleyview, will see snowfall totals at the lower end of this range. Areas of higher terrain and northeast facing slopes, such as Highway 40 between Grande Prairie and Hinton, will see snowfall amounts at the higher end of this range. Snowfall will taper off north to south Saturday and Saturday night. Travel will likely be challenging. Visibility will likely be reduced at times. Local utility outages are possible. The first accumulating snow of the season is expected late this week, which may affect holiday travel. Rain will continue to spread across northern Alberta today. Precipitation will change to snow on Friday in west-central regions, and for much of the province by Saturday. Many areas of Alberta are expected to see accumulating snow on Saturday, possibly including the Calgary-Edmonton corridor. The highest snowfall amounts are expected in western parts of the province, including Grande Cache, Hinton, Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House where snow totals of 10 to 25 cm are currently forecast. Snow amounts for other areas of the province remain uncertain. Snow will taper off from north to south on Sunday. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.
